In early November, I was wandering around Red Hook peering in and out of open studios with some friends, half impressed, but mostly apathetic to what what we saw. A few artists caught our eyes but none enough to join in lengthy conversation. Stumbling off the beaten path, an hour or so left before doors would close, we made our way into the studio space of Adriana Atema and three others; an artistic haven with a spiritual sense to it. Immediately I was struck by Adriana's use of bright and contrasting colors, geometric shapes and minimalism in her paintings. They were strewn from floor to ceiling in her corner studio.
Adriana's energy is pretty palpable. Within a few minutes we were exchanging on ideas, thoughts and issues of mind and heart. She connects openly, warm and when you have her attention, supremely focused just on you. The sun was going down with an orange glow. She offered us some tea by the window to take in the last of the views and continue conversation. It didn't even feel like we were in NYC anymore. It was apparent that this was some special little community that she's worked hard to build, people the main focus. I wanted to dive in deeper and get to know her better and just capture her, being her. We met a week later, as the sun went down, again. Here are my favorites from the session. A few are favorites of mine to date.
Hope you enjoy :)
